Mobile Computing and Social Networking (RISD independent study by Dan Chen)
“Indeed, when people lose their cell phones, it’s like losing their minds. And they forget who their friends are because they have lost their cell phones.”
James Katz. Smart phones has becoming the extension of our lives, we rely on it as a navigation, entertainment, communication/social networking and productivity device. It is Always on/Always on you. Through this course I will learn how to develop, program and design for the iOS, building on their knowledge base of object-oriented programming models, I examine and complete a Web App featuring HTML 5, CSS 3, JavaScript and touch behaviors. Lessons include exposure to development frameworks such as Titanium, PhoneGap and Corona.
Marshall McLuhan ones said, “As technology advances, it reverses the characteristics of every situation again and again. The age of automation is going to be the age of ‘do it yourself.”, by the same token, “as the mobile phone technology advances, it should reverses the characteristics of every situation again and again. The age of virtual communication is going to be the age of in person communication.” In other word, is it possible to create a mobile app. that brings people together in a physical environment and coexist with the virtual space, instead of solely virtual.
I will try to use the development knowledge to create apps that will achieve one of the following goals: Building a social network platform to bring people together
Building a location bases app. that connects people within the proximity.
Collaborative work that submitted by users who downloaded the app, could be text, audio or image based.
The grade will be judged by the app.’s interface design, ease of use, and the potential for contributing to people’s social life (if the app. gets approval in time and have enough distribution, that would be another factor)
I will also be marketing the app.,submitting the app to apple app store for approval.
If time allows, there might be a few experimentation with the c74 (iphone app that connects to MasMsp) with Arduino.

During the 1st half of the semester student will explore and learn the iOS development platform, and making prototypes with photoshop sketches. The 2nd half of the semester student will concentrate on developing, marketing, distributing the app.. Student will then self evaluate the app using the readings and share the experience at the end of the course with the instructor.
