Communication design is a efficient system that design to establish communication between people. However due to the overwhelming media outlets, we are overloading with different media (Book, internet …). My guess is because of that, there is a need for simpler communication. I do my work around experience design, I believe that is the deeper communication in human emotional level.

I have tendency of controlling everything in projects. I like to control and design every detail that leads to specific experience. Eddo Suggest that I try giving that some of the control to the audience, that would open up some possibility  and unexpected use out of the project. Like hack/using the system, but the key is to develop a platform.

Think about vertical, video, software and  physical  presentation, which one matters to you. Do they  matter?

I often see see use of robots or machines sometimes hurt our ability to learn. Instead of taking risks ourselves sometimes we over dependent on  robots, machines or programs to perform the difficult tasks. Even human ethics could be broken down into systematic formulae and allow the program to determine the outcome for us. Of course there is a boundary between assist and over dependency, maybe I need to look any program, robots as transitional object. Making the system but at the sometime that does not allow for over dependency of the system, it would be a system that only temporary assistant but does not allow the user to over use the system. Like baby’s pacifier.

Fake it til you make it” (also called “act as if“) is a common catchphrase that means to imitate confidence so that as the confidence produces success, it will generate real confidence.[1] The purpose is to avoid getting stuck in a self fulfilling prophecy related to one’s fear of not being confident, e.g., by thinking, “I can’t ask that girl out because she would sense my lack of confidence.” The article How You Too Can Be an Optimist in Prevention points out, “In research at Wake Forest University, for example, scientists asked a group of 50 students to act like extroverts for 15 minutes in a group discussion, even if they didn’t feel like it. The more assertive and energetic the students acted, the happier they were”.[2]

It is often recommended as a therapy technique for combating depression. In this case, the idea is to go through the routines of life as if one were enjoying them, despite the fact that initially it feels forced, and continue doing this until the happiness becomes real. This is an example of a positive feedback loop.

Lack of interest is suicide? I saw this on the front page of art.uconn.edu and got me thinking a lot of jobs out there are “boring” or unchallenging from most people. People are not able to do what they really wanna do because of finical situation of due the lack of time. So I would say if you hate your job, find something that you that interest you.

My work explores the corporate exploitation of individuality and personal customization that is used to create sense of comfort, reliability and safety.

Through a series of objects and installations that replicate the corporate structure which allows the user to experience the work and coming to a realization of the structure itself. This could then developed as 2nd series of work where the user or me exploit the loophole of the structure

Mobile Computing and Social Networking (RISD independent study by Dan Chen)

“Indeed, when people lose their cell phones, it’s like losing their minds. And they forget who their friends are because they have lost their cell phones.”
James Katz. Smart phones has becoming the extension of our lives, we rely on it as a navigation, entertainment, communication/social networking and productivity device. It is Always on/Always on you. Through this course I will learn how to develop, program and design for the iOS, building on their knowledge base of object-oriented programming models, I examine and complete a Web App featuring HTML 5, CSS 3, JavaScript and touch behaviors. Lessons include exposure to development frameworks such as Titanium, PhoneGap and Corona.
Marshall McLuhan ones said, “As technology advances, it reverses the characteristics of every situation again and again. The age of automation is going to be the age of ‘do it yourself.”, by the same token, “as the mobile phone technology advances, it should reverses the characteristics of every situation again and again. The age of virtual communication is going to be the age of in person communication.” In other word, is it possible to create a mobile app. that brings people together in a physical environment and coexist with the virtual space, instead of solely virtual.
I will try to use the development knowledge to create apps that will achieve one of the following goals: Building a social network platform to bring people together
Building a location bases app. that connects people within the proximity.
Collaborative work that submitted by users who downloaded the app, could be text, audio or image based.
The grade will be judged by the app.’s interface design, ease of use, and the potential for contributing to people’s social life (if the app. gets approval in time and have enough distribution, that would be another factor)
I will also be marketing the app.,submitting the app to apple app store for approval.
If time allows, there might be a few experimentation with the c74 (iphone app that connects to MasMsp) with Arduino.

Course Readings:
#1. Handbook of Mobile Communication Studies. #2. James Katz, Ronald E. Rice, http://cacm.acm.org/magazines/ 2009/9/38918-falling-into-the-net-main-street-america-playing-games-and-making-friends-online/pdf #3. War and Peace in the Global Village (1968)

During the 1st half of the semester student will explore and learn the iOS development platform, and making prototypes with photoshop sketches. The 2nd half of the semester student will concentrate on developing, marketing, distributing the app.. Student will then self evaluate the app using the readings and share the experience at the end of the course with the instructor.

With the technology and social media that we have today, we have less and less need to meet people in person. Amazon allows people to order goods without meeting a real person, same with email and text message, we are more and more removed from in person communication.

There is less and less need for meeting in person, which forms more and more isolations amount people. This pattern might becomes repetitive and one might become socially incapable to communicate in person or seeking networks that has a mediation barrier. Match.com, Facebook or twitter serves that need. People sometimes look for pets or machines as the alternative for coping with loneliness. They find less and less reason and need for face to face communication.

The industrial revolution and capitalism requires better efficiency in production and communication, and in that process the ways of communication has becoming easier and faster. It also removed the need to be physically present. We might ask ourselves, do we still need in person communication? meet face to face? Is there a reason that people should gather together in the physical environment? In the business environment, it might seem waste of time to fly to a place to chat about a project, but is there any value in face to face meetings? or we are fighting our human natural? what will this do to shape our sociality ?

Structure or systems such as computer systems or networking systems impose limitations. It is the hackers who find loop hole within that limitation or constrain that questions the structure itself.

I remember going out for lunch for dinner with my friends, and we keep asking each other where to go for lunch. I would you “you pick”, he or she would say no “you pick”. Then we will relay on the phone app to pick the restaurant for us. Having a device or another person giving the directions gives the person who is following the direction feel a sense or orientation, that is if the person is disorientated or can’t decided at the first place.

Similar to symbols and sings in the airport or GPS navigation system that tells what they should do and where they should go. This is going to be more and more apparent in the future as access to the technology gets easier. As I am typing this article, I use google search suggest to check my spelling. That gives me a relief that my words would communicate to the reader.

Structure plays rolls in comfort, it is expected and controlled to keep everything under wrap. However if the structure is not flexible enough, one might find it hard to follow or leaving the structure.

I like to learn different structure in different fields, even in art, it has certain procedures that one have to follow through in order to get to certain level of “respect” in the field. Things such as craftsmanship and even how it’s made. In order to be creative, the artist might break the structure or working within certain limitation to create works that are ground breaking.

Most of my work are mostly about structure, A systematic structure or instruction gives me comfort, and giving instruction or impose store on others gives me a sense or control and pleasure of serving others.
